Can Heavy Rain Cause a Roof Leak in Aberdare?

Yes, and more often than people expect it happens with nothing visibly wrong with the roof at all. A roof is built to shed water travelling downwards; heavy rain in a valley rarely travels only downwards.

Rain Falling and Rain Being Driven Are Different Things

A pitched roof works by overlap. Each slate covers the head of the one below it, so water running down the surface never reaches the joint. It is a beautifully reliable arrangement and it assumes one thing: that the water is going down.

Wind-driven rain arrives close to horizontal. It gets into laps and joints that vertical rain never touches, and at the head of a valley, where the sides funnel the wind and the rising ground wrings more water out of the air, it can be driven hard and from a consistent direction for hours.

So a roof here can be watertight through years of ordinary weather and leak in one storm, without anything having broken. Nothing came off. The water simply arrived from an angle the roof was never designed to shed.

The First Place: The Ridge

The ridge is the one line on the roof where the overlap runs out. It is capped rather than lapped, traditionally with ridge tiles bedded on mortar, and mortar that has been cracking its bond for decades no longer seals anything.

In driven rain, water is pushed up the slope against the direction of fall and arrives at the ridge from beneath. On a mid-terrace roof this is the most common route in, precisely because everything else is sheltered by the neighbours and the ridge is not.

It shows inside as damp near the top of an upstairs ceiling, often along the middle of the house, and it is intermittent — only in weather from the right direction, which is why it can go unexplained for a long time.

The Second Place: Where the Back Extension Meets the Main Roof

Almost every terrace in the valley has gained something at the back. Where that lower roof meets the main roof there is a valley or a flashed junction, and it carries a disproportionate share of the roof's water through a very narrow route.

In prolonged heavy rain that channel is working at its limit. Add a blockage — and a storm delivers the leaves, moss and grit that block it at the same moment as the water — and the level rises above the edge of the slate either side and runs underneath it into the roof.

The tell for this one is timing. A leak that appears only in prolonged heavy rain and stays dry in ordinary rain is usually a capacity problem rather than a hole. That is a different diagnosis and a different repair, and telling us which you have saves time on the roof.

The Third Place, Which Is Not the Roof At All

A good share of what gets reported as a roof leak after heavy rain is guttering.

When a gutter is overwhelmed or blocked, water goes over the back edge and runs down the wall behind it, saturating the top of the wall, the fascia and the ends of the roof timbers. Because it soaks in rather than dripping, it shows up as damp at the TOP of an upstairs wall rather than as a wet ceiling, and it gets blamed on everything except the gutter.

The Fourth Place: Down the Inside of a Chimney

This one is worth knowing because it produces a stain that looks exactly like a roof leak and is not one.

A chimney stack is masonry standing in the weather on all four sides. In prolonged driven rain it saturates, and water can track down through the brickwork or the flue and emerge at ceiling level inside — typically on or beside a chimney breast, in a bedroom, appearing during or shortly after heavy rain.

Unused stacks are the usual culprits, because a working flue dries a chimney from the inside and an abandoned one has nothing doing that job. The give-away is the position: damp on or immediately around a chimney breast, rather than out in the middle of a ceiling. It is why we assess the stack alongside the covering rather than treating them as separate jobs.

Why the Leak Is Never Where You Think

Water entering at a ridge can run along the underside of the slate, cross a batten, travel down a rafter and drop through a ceiling several metres away. Following a stain straight upwards is the most common way to repair the wrong part of a roof.

This matters if you are getting quotations. A roofer who proposes to repair directly above the damp patch, without having worked out how water could be getting there, is guessing — and a guess that misses means paying for the same leak twice.

What Helps Us Find It

  • Does it leak in all rain, or only in prolonged heavy rain?
  • Does it leak in rain from a particular direction, or any direction?
  • Whereabouts inside does it appear, and how high up?
  • Is it a ceiling, or is it the top of a wall?
  • Does it start straight away, or after an hour or two of rain?
  • Has it happened before, and did anything change in between?

That last pair is genuinely diagnostic. A leak that starts immediately usually means an open route; one that starts after sustained rain usually means something is filling up first.

What Not to Do

Do not go up to look, and be wary of anyone who proposes to seal the ridge or the valley with mastic or roofing cement. Those set rigid while the roof moves with temperature, so they crack — usually within a few years, sometimes within one — and they make the proper repair harder and dearer when it comes.
