There is one observation worth making before you do anything else in Barry, and it takes ten seconds. Look at whether what came down is broken. On a coastal roof that single fact tells you more about what the repair needs to be than the size of the gap does.
A roof that has lost one tile has lost the restraint around several more, and whatever is now loose will come down at some point in the next few hours. Concrete tile is heavy, slate arrives edge-on, and neither lands straight down in a wind coming off the Channel.
And do not go up. Not onto the roof, not up a ladder for a better look, and not because somebody has arrived at the door with a ladder on the van. A roof that has shed material is unstable in ways invisible from below, and it is wet.
This is the observation that matters, and it is the one most people skip past on the way to worrying about the hole.
Something struck the roof, or the tile or slate had deteriorated to the point of failing under load. Both are usually local. The tiles either side are probably fine.
The fixings failed. The tile or slate was perfectly serviceable and the nail holding it was not, and it simply lifted clear. This is the common finding in Barry and it is a completely different situation, because a nail does not corrode in isolation.
Why this matters so much here. Barry faces the Bristol Channel, and salt-laden air corrodes the nails, clips and straps holding a roof covering on. That corrosion happens across a whole slope at roughly the same rate, over years, invisibly. So undamaged material on the ground is not telling you about one tile. It is telling you about the state of every fixing on that slope.
The clearest evidence there is. Keep it somewhere safe and show it to whoever quotes. A rusted-through nail still in the hole answers the whole question.
Not in the bin. Stack it flat somewhere out of the wind.
Barry's housing runs from Edwardian terraces built as the docks expanded through interwar and postwar semis to modern estates, and whether there is underlay beneath the covering depends entirely on which of those you have. On the older stock there may be none, in which case a gap puts water straight onto the timbers and it arrives inside faster than people expect.
The last one is genuinely useful. An Edwardian slate roof near the docks and a 1970s concrete tile roof inland are different propositions with different failure modes, and knowing which we are coming to changes what we bring.
Wind does not usually start in the middle of a slope. It starts at an edge, and the two edges worth looking at from the ground are the verge and the ridge.
The verge is the sloping edge running up each gable. On older Barry housing it is bedded in mortar; on later stock it may be a dry-verge system made of clipped components. Either way it is the point wind gets under the covering first, and a gap there is not one tile missing — it is the edge of the roof standing open.
The ridge should be dead straight and evenly spaced when you sight along it. A tile proud of its neighbours, rotated, or with a gap beside it means the mortar bond has gone, and on a roof of any age it will have gone along most of the line rather than in one spot.
If either has moved, say so when you call. It changes the job from replacing tiles to re-forming an edge, and it is the difference between a repair that holds and one that gets tested again in February.
If undamaged material came down, ask directly: are the fixings around this area sound, or is the same thing about to happen either side of the repair?
Somebody who has actually looked will have a view and be able to say why. A quotation that replaces the missing tiles without engaging with that question is not wrong exactly, but it leaves you to find out over the next two winters — and because access is a large part of the cost of any roof repair, you pay for it every time somebody comes out.

Yes, stack it flat somewhere out of the wind. Matching a profile is much easier with one in hand, sound slate is often worth relaying, an insurer may want to see it, and any nail still attached is the clearest evidence of what failed.
Often a few days, if there is intact underlay beneath and nothing is loose above a path. Not months — wind works at the edges of a gap, and exposed underlay perishes.
It changes what fails. Salt-laden air corrodes nails, clips and flashing fixings, so coastal roofs commonly fail at the fixings while the tiles and slates themselves are still perfectly sound.
